My club has a complicated tool grinder which should in theory be able to fix the end mill but I have never used it. Result: chipped HSS end mill because some of the packing must have been hardened steel (probably the bits I extracted from a cheap feeler gauge). I then had the bright idea of making the packing narrower by sandwiching it all together and milling it down.

Apart from some paint loss and scratches on the chuck and a few bits of bent packing I got away with it. Next I was so focused on turning right up close to the chuck that I ran the lathe tool packing (which is too wide) into the chuck. Chuck was OK luckily but the lathe tool chipped. Result: I ran the lathe carriage into the collet chuck. "Mistakes are good" is one of my favourite sayings (because that is how you learn) but it doesn't always feel that way when you are making them and, like London buses, they tend to cluster together.įirst I forgot to disengage the screwcutting backgear before trying to part off a screw in the lathe. Making screws, and making them to correctly match the period of the movement, seems necessary for good work. I also had an American musical tall clock last year that came in with a couple of cadmium-plated screws in it. I have had one clock where the bridge was attached with wood screws driven into the brass plate ever so well. The Philips head screws were almost one of the better examples of the "work" done. Part are readily available as well as plenty of after market Parts. Sherline makes their lathes and accessories in the USA. The hand wheel on the end has enough control that its easy to get a good finish by hand. Given the mess in the springs, I was surprised it ran at all. Even though there is a power feed for the lathe its not necessary.

The customer had been charged nearly $2000 for the "restoration." It didn't run for more than a few minutes. A prick punch had been liberally used elsewhere. The center shaft back pivot was worn down to nearly nothing, but the plate was bushed to the very small pivot size, with a bushing in a bushing in a bushing. All the oil was green, rancid, and stunk to high heaven.

This makes it easy to set up for relatively sophisticated operations like cutting gears without having to know anything about CNC programming beyond what is entered from these simple keypads. The barrels had not been opened or the springs cleaned in a very long time. The rotary table can also be “daisy chained” with Sherline’s linear controller (P/N 8800) to achieve combinations of rotary and linear movement in sequence. As with all Sherline accessories, complete instructions are included. The unit can also be “daisy chained” with other units to trigger sequential actions.

When it is complete, it signals back to continue the program. An input signal triggers the programmed function. In addition, the unit can be connected to an existing CNC control to act in conjunction with that system. You get everything you need to make complex indexing jobs easy. The CNC rotary indexer is a stand-alone unit. Computations are made internally to a high degree of accuracy to avoid cumulative errors. This allows the accurate machining of items like gears with odd numbers of teeth. Basic resolution is 28,800 steps per revolution, ☐.006° per step. If an error is made, previous positions can be accurately recalled by hitting another button. After entering the number of steps per revolution (or the number of degrees per step) on a simple numeric keypad, the table advances quickly and precisely to the next position at the touch of a single advance key.
